Hot Summers and Wet Chow Chow Coats
With each season passing, there is something beautiful added to our lives here at Ciao Chows. Pretty girl Opal is charming our late summer garden, eagerly helping clear up the dead branches and leaves!
She seems to have a special affinity for playing in the rain getting very wet or lying under the sprinklers.
The Chow Chow's well-purposed, double coat traps humidity close to the skin - be it after a bath or the sprinklers, a swim or any other 'getting wet' activity. Unless dried properly down to the skin, this trapped humidity quickly causes all kinds of skin complications. For a healthy Chow Chow skin, the following tips have proven useful.
For my Chow Chows the best solution has been to dry the coat with a commercial dryer down to the skin.
* luke-warm water is best, even in summer
* if my dogs have been in saltwater at the sea, shampoo is used before drying
* if my dogs were in mud/muddy fresh water, a very thorough rinsing is required particularly around the feet
* a commercial dryer with heat settings works best for use in different seasons
* dryers and particularly blasters (very high powered dryers) are used with care around the face/ears and with puppies
May your late summer garden be filled
with loads of Chowfulness!
